                        Julia Correia Named 2012
ARKTESOL Outstanding Educator of the Year

“Not only is she a gracious, giving teacher, but she is also a generous spirit who will drop everything to help another human being," said Christine Smart, Assistant Director for the HSU Center for Language Proficiency.

On October 11, 2012, at the Annual ARKTESOL Conference held at the John Q. Hammons Center, Julia Correia, Founding Director and ESL Instructor at the Center for Language Proficiency at Henderson State University’s (HSU) Intensive English Program, was named the 2012 ARKTESOL Outstanding Educator of the Year.

During the past twelve years, the Center has provided ESL classes for students from twenty-four countries. Ten years ago, Ms. Correia obtained Arkansas Department of Education approval to develop courses for students to obtain their ESL endorsement at HSU’s ESL Graduate Academies. Over 1900 Arkansas public school teachers have received ESL endorsement training through HSU’s ESL Graduate Academies.

"My life is about working with English language learners, teachers, students, parents, families, colleagues, and community," says Correia. "ESL students walk into my classroom right into my heart."
