He has also contributed to theory and application in the area of bilingual education, and has done important work in the area of reading. He was the 1977 Incline Bench Press champion of Venice Beach and holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He is the author of The Power of Reading (Heinemann, 2004, second edition), Explorations in Language and Use (Heinemann, 2003) and co-author, with James Crawford, of English Learners in American Classrooms Scholastic, 2007).
On October 11, 2012, at the Annual ARKTESOL Conference held at the John Q. Hammons Center, Julia Correia, Founding Director and ESL Instructor at the Center for Language Proficiency at Henderson State University’s (HSU) Intensive English Program, was named the 2012 ARKTESOL Outstanding Educator of the Year.
During the past twelve years, the Center has provided ESL classes for students from twenty-four countries. Ten years ago, Ms. Correia obtained Arkansas Department of Education approval to develop courses for students to obtain their ESL endorsement at HSU’s ESL Graduate Academies. Over 1900 Arkansas public school teachers have received ESL endorsement training through HSU’s ESL Graduate Academies.
"My life is about working with English language learners, teachers, students, parents, families, colleagues, and community," says Correia. "ESL students walk into my classroom right into my heart."
